About the Artist

“The paintings I make are simultaneous with smiling, crying, breathing, eating, screams of joy and defeat, gentile caresses and birds flying, victories and tragedies. They maintain and fuel my curiosity in the infinite mystery of illusion. They are fueled by personal adventures in travel and life-experiences, the world around me, dreams in both night or day, boiling memories, wishes, discoveries and deep interior devils and angels. Nostalgia plays, music inspires, love is a privilege and damnation. They accompany the spirit and juggle psychology. They are reading a book that I wrote a long time ago, but never read, until… I paint.

The compositions are determined by careful formal and secret strategies designed to both accentuate the power of the imagery, and guide the eye to how best experience it. They may charm, hypnotize, reveal or fool. The size and shape of the canvasses are chosen only to augment the integrity and exigencies of the contents.

I have been making art since I can remember, well over 70 years, and am sure that the process is a holy poem at times, and at times being first serenaded, then kicked in the ass by a donkey dressed like a clown and falling into an eternal empty vortex. Mostly, the physicality of the process is like eating a fantastic pastry.

I usually prefer puzzling complexity to inane simplicity, I consider all art ever made everywhere grounds for fertile ideas, am bored by vulgarity, and love a good laugh.” — Alexander Shundi
